Clarifiers/Fining Agents
These chemicals help you produce clearer beer and wine
Gelatin Fining Agent - for beer or wine
Fining agent for wine and beer. Also remove excess tannins from wine. Use 1 teaspoon per gallon of beer, 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of wine. Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water over gelatin powder, stirring to dissolve then stir thoroughly into wine or beer. Using more than the recommended amount will remove too much of the color and flavor compounds from wine and some of the body from beer.

Irish Moss - for beer
Irish Moss removes positively charged proteins in the wort. These proteins cause beer to become hazy when it is chilled. Irish moss has a negative charge and attracts the proteins helping them settle to the bottom of the brew pot. Add one teaspoon of Irish Moss to the brew pot at 15 minutes before the end of the boil.

Whirlfloc Tablets - 10 pack - for beer  
Beer Clarifier - Use instead of Irish Moss.
A blend of Irish Moss and purified Kappa carrageenan that encourages the precipitation of haze removing materials such as proteins and Beta glucans. Prepared in a quick dissolving, highly soluble tablet form. Add 1 tablet per 5 gallons with 15-20 minutes left in boil.

SuperMoss - for beer
Our favorite clearing agent for beer. Better than Irish Moss for clearing your beer. This is Carrageenan, which is the active ingredient in Irish Moss. You use only 1/4 Tsp per 5 gallon batch, so this jar should last for years.

Bentonite - for wine
Useful when added to clear juice must at the beginning of a fermentation and to provide yeast nucleation sites. Speeds the onset of fermentation. Use 4 teaspoons for five gallons of wine. Dissolve by blending into 1/2 cup of boiling water. Allow to stand for 24 hours and stir thoroughly into wine. Wait two weeks and then rack wine from sediment.

Sparkalloid Powder - Hot Mix for Wine
Popular hot mix version. Use 1/3 oz per batch. Sparkalloid must be boiled in water to get it to dissolve. It is positively charged, and is good for white wines. You may use Sparkalloid after bentonite for a good combination of clarifying.
